Dan McNeil

Dan celebrates his 25th anniversary in Chicago radio in August and he’ll do it where it all began at 670 The Score!

McNeil’s candor, quick wit and unpredictable approach are his trademarks. Under Dan has consistently been among the highest-rated radio programs among adult men for several years.

“I’ve been in ‘training camp’ for this for more than four months,” said McNeil. “It’s time to let the tigers out. This is a chance to win in a brand new daypart for me and in a slot that has become more meaningful. We’ve got a great crew.”

“It’s awesome to have Mac back on the Score team,” said Mitch Rosen, WSCR-AM Program Director.  “Mac returns to where it all began for sports radio in Chicago – the Score.  With the addition of Mac, the line-up now becomes a Chicago radio All-Star dream team along with Mully, Hanley, Boers, and Bernstein.”

McNeil, 45, was an original cast member of “The Score,” for which he served as an afternoon host until his resignation in October of 2000. During Danny Mac’s nine-year run, he developed a reputation as a well connected, college and pro football addict whose feel for radio production separated him from the pack.

“I’m lucky not because I’ve got a job every guy would want, but because I recognized I wanted it around seven or eight,” McNeil says. “I was a decent amateur athlete, but I knew I wanted to be Oscar Madison when I grew up. I was writing for my high school newspaper one month into my freshman year and I was the nerd doing play-by-play into a Ross portable cassette recorder while watching Blackhawks games on the tube. I got a jump on everybody years before sports radio was born.”

Following his college years at Ball State, McNeil interned at WGN Radio in the summer and fall of ’85 as a producer for “Sports Central” and for Chicago Bears pre-game, halftime and post-game shows. Mac then took a position as a staff writer/columnist for his hometown daily paper, The Times of Northwest Indiana.

In January of ’88, McNeil got his first big shot in Chicago when he was hired as executive producer of Chet Coppock’s weeknight sports show and the Chicago Bulls broadcasts on WLUP AM 1000. “Dangerous Dan” quickly developed his own following as a sidekick and fill-in host, as well as a contributor to the station’s popular Dahl and Meier show.

Dan has three sons and resides with his wife, Sheri, an insurance defense attorney, in Northwest Indiana. His fundraising endeavors include autism research and treatment, neuroblastoma research and the Highland High School athletic department.

Hey there Danny,
Love the show. I was thinking of throwing a bags tourneyment that will benefit a local Autism Awareness donation. I was wondering if you could give me any information on such a charity that will be 501(c)3. I believe I have a time , and place for the event, but could use a hand on the who will benefit. My motovation is my cousin had triplets 4 years ago, and one of their sons was born with Autism in addition to the daughter that is a few years older. They are the hardest working , and loving parents I have ever seen. Not having children myself, and wanting to get involved in the community and have some fun in the process is something I’d really like to do to generate some money for a good cause. If you have any advice on this potential event it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me via Email for my phone number
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Danny, I have prediction on blackhawk / flyers series.. hawks in six.. and yes six.. winning in front of abnoxious orange..I think the hawks will be surprised by the flyers and unfortunatly disappoint the home crowd on Sat night.. I am going to take advantage of this and bet $1,000 on flyers to win.. and hence finance my trip to Philly to see the cup hoisted by my Hawk team.. What ya think..??????

Dudes, you had me laughing so hard today with your “ron and pat” bit (after mentioning that ron was hospitalized). Jesus Christ…I laughed so hard.
I think that it should be a regular bit you guys do (in light of the woes on the northside); it might help us cub fans to cope. I know it made me laugh and I’m sure others would appreciate it as well. There wouldn’t be any shortage of bit material! Throw in a voice for uncle lou too!
I listen daily so keep up the good stuff and think about adding ‘ron, pat and lou’ more regularly. It’d be a crack up!

What a bush league article on the fans of Philly. I would never dispute the fact that we are rude and nasty fans. But for a chicago fan to complain is border line retarded. Did you see a father son combo jump onto the ice to beat another teams coach senseless? Did one of the fans dump a beer on patrick kane while he was making a play? Come down off the high horse, you sound like Harry, “father, father, a philly fan is yelling at me father”.

    Pat Whalen
    June 5, 2010 7:27 am

well put, Jon. you can find examples of crass behavior in any town. i’m a Philly fan in Chicago & i’ve had beer dumped on me at a Cubs game. this guy is taking the obvious shot that everyone does. shows a lack of creativity & laziness.

June 5, 2010 6:54 am

Dan, I’m reading where when you were out in Philly you made some derogatory comments about the locals, including something about opening up a ‘Lane Bryant’ store. If that’s your idea of humor… Ha ha… ha. Look in the mirror. Once a fatty, always a fatty.

June 5, 2010 8:15 am

Dan, cant yoo come up with a new angle? the philly crowd is rude and the like is so old and beaten to death. Like those htings dotn happen in other cities. Hawks fans are frauds anyway. Did they even have any fans a few years ago? So dotn cmpare the 2 again. People swearing at a hockey game, oh my. Well you wear the other teams jersey what do you expect to happen? Anythign goes except violence chief. Try to be a littlel more original next time. Cubs and bears fans are cretins. So dont act liek they are not.

It’s a great series, best SCF in years and you focus on Philadelphia fans reputation, which was overdone 10 years ago. I guess you’re just diverting attention from your team that squandered a two game lead.

Mother of all foul places? Someone sounds bitter because they had to sit there and watch their team get whipped. People in Philly have a pulse. They have a passion. Unlike the bandwagon jumping fraud Blackhawks fans, who don’t even understand icing.

This notion that Philly is so much worse than any other big city is getting real old. How about the lovely Cubs fans who dumped beer on one of our Phillies last year. How about the 2 jackass Sox fans who attacked a first base coach? This type of stereotype reporting is just lazy.

Seriously, dude. What city has a Father/Son tag team that attacks 57 y/o first base coaches??? Dumps beer on baseball players while the ball is still in play??? June 5, 2010 11:54 am

Hey Nancy, your article on Philly fans brought a smile to my face and summed up what I figured all along. Chicago and thier fans aren’t as blue collar and tough as they’re made out to be. What did you expect at a SCF home game in Philly? Cookies and hugs?

That’s called home ice advantage and what we Flyers fans call passion. The same passion that was there when Chicago was lucky to fill 12,000 seats a night. Take off the skirt and find your set.

Aren’t we sophomoric (from philly.com) Dan McNeil, a radio host in Chicago, recently wrote a column for the Tribune about attending a Stanley Cup game at the Wachovia Center. In the story, McNeil called Flyers fans “low rent” – then he described one local woman as “220 unattractive pounds, but with a neatly trimmed beard” and added “if you’re considering opening a Lane Bryant store, this is as good a place as any.”

Called your show earlier today, but was disconnected. I represent Lane Bryant stores & wanted to thank you for your plug in a recent column. Also, wanted to see if you had any interest in endorsement opportunities with our store. You look to be about the size of our customer base & I imagine your wife & three boys are, too. How about this; we’ll send you over a couple of size 26 outfits. You take them home, try ‘em on & maybe, if you like what you see, you can appear in some print ads &/or TV commercials for us. Maybe the whole family, even. Anyway, I’m going to FedEx the outfits today & will call to follow up later in the week. All the best. And remember, if you can’t find it at Lane Bryant, you probably need a tent.

Hey Dan,
Wanted to start by saying I am a big fan of yours and was thrilled when you came back to the SCORE. I do have to ride you a bit on something. Last week when you were in Philly, you had the VERSUS people on and you were pretty much kissing there asses. Talking about how wonderful they are, especially since they fixed the problems of getting the Hawks games on. Well, for us who have Dish Network, the problem hasn’t been solved. I can’t believe for a championship series in any major sport I have to leave my house to find a bar that has it on. Just because they got you tickets, bought you a few drinks and a cheesesteak, doesn’t change the fact they have really dropped the ball on the this whole Blackhawks season. I actually expected a bit more from you.

Dear Danny Mac,
I thought the Tribune’s portrayal of Chris Pronger in figure skating garb was bush league, irresponsible journalism at its ugliest.
If I’m the editor of the Trib i don’t let that crap go to print. First of all, Chris Pronger, love him or hate him is a damn good hockey player. Secondly, what purpose is served by running this? I truly respect your opinion and insight. Am I in need of an education, or do you agree? Please let me know at your convenience. Many thanks.

Dan:

I was listenig to your show on the morning of Junw 10th and heard your comment about WGN not sharing the final goal in the game with your station. You were critical of their desicsion. let me point out a few things

1. WGN and WSCR ae in competition with each other for audience so why should WGN give WSCR any publicity by allowing their call to be heard on your station.

2. For a number of years WSCR did carry the Blackhawks nad gave up the rights to broadcast them when the team was not doing so well.

3. I rember when the White Sxo won the pennant and WSCR did nothare its coverage with any station other than your sister station WBBM.

4. You as a broadcaster should know more than anyone the competetive nature of Chicago Radio as witnessed with your compettion with WMVP where you once worked before rejoining the Score.

i would be interested in your reply to these observations.

Sincerely,

Allen Freitag

Mac, I figured you would appreciate this story more than your afternoon counterparts, not only because of your love for hockey, but also because of your familiarity with the drive from Chicago to Terre Haute and vice versa.

So I woke up in my apartment in Terre Haute, Indiana yesterday at about 7 a.m. EDT. I hopped in the shower, and after changing my mind about five different times, I eventually decided there was no way in hell I was going to miss this rally. I drove up Rt. 41 to Merrilville, then cut over on Rt. 83 up to 80/94. I got downtown much faster than I anticipated, and I had planned to exit the Dan Ryan at 18th St. and head over to my cousins’ house at Flournoy and Racine to park, figuring there was no way I would be able to find parking downtown. What happened next was my first stroke of luck for the day, as I ended up exiting on to Lake Shore Drive instead of 18th St. by mistake, and suddenly finding myself in the heart of downtown. I got lost in the mass of traffic on the outskirts of the parade route for a few minutes, but was finally able to orient myself in the direction of Columbus Dr.

Somehow in this mass hysteria of the rally crowd I ended up with two of the best viewpoints I possibly could have had. I was probably one of the last people to get there, as I didn’t park my car until 10:30 a.m. local time, which is when the rally was supposed to start. I parked in the Millenium Park garage, and was able to walk right down Randolph Street to the corner of Randolph and Michigan, where I was about 5 rows back from the parade itself. I also ended up being on an incline, to further improve my vantage point, and had a perfect view as Toews hoisted the Cup and Kane chugged some of his champagne right in front of me.

After the parade passed by, a huge mass of people followed the police up Michigan Ave. to the eventual rally point. I hung back, thinking I might just take off for home. I waited on that corner for a while, soaking in everything I had just seen, from Byfuglien raising his championship belt to Stan Mikita and Tony O acting just the same as the current Blackhawks players were, when I finally decided that I was going to try and find myself a good spot for the rally. I headed back east up Randolph a bit, trying to avoid the huge crowd and come in from the side. I eventually ended up on Stetson Ave. walking towards Wacker Dr. When I turned the corner there, I saw a huge mass of people trying to somehow watch the rally from the side of the stage. I was able to work my way down Wacker a little bit, as more and more fans started to leave when they realized that we really didn’t have a good view of the stage. I just kept pushing further up Wacker, trying to get close to the stage if possible. But then, all of a sudden, I decided to finally notice the huge red double decker buses immediately to my right, and decided I had gone far enough down Wacker at this point.

What happened next, I will never forget.

As soon as the rally had ended and the last note of Chelsea Dagger hit, I started to inch my way closer to the people lined up on the barricade next to the buses. I ended up about three rows back from the barricade, and before I knew it, I was within 10 ft. of the Stanley Cup! It was surreal, the Cup being carried past, right in front of me. But my fortunes had just begun. It ended up that the bus that I had chosen to stand by was the bus meant for the Cup to make it’s trip back to the United Center, along with Kaner, Big Buff, Coach Q, Hossa, Ladd, and a few others. I couldn’t believe my fortune as one by one, they started posing for pictures for us, each of them taking turns raising the Cup above their heads and giving it the infamous kiss. As the Cup was being passed around, somebody tossed a beer up to Kane, which he promptly shook up and showered the crowd with, again, an experience, albeit, a juvenile one, I’ll never forget. I couldn’t believe I had been so fortunate, as minutes before the buses took off, people started throwing hats and jerseys up to Kane to sign, and he obliged. I decided to keep my own jersey on my back as others began to hurl theirs up to the bus, but I will never forget the excitement of those players and Coach Q as they each took turns hoisting the Cup.

Not a bad day for a guy who was supposed to be at work in Terre Haute all day, huh?

Regarding odds, -500…if you bet $100, you cannot lose $500. This means that in order to win $100, you must bet $500. To win $10, you must bet $50, etc.

If you had time to look at it, please let me know if you’d like to talk about the book and/or that era of Chicago baseball during your program. Can somebody finnaly say it. Anyone could manage these baseball teams with just a computer. Do any of the managers or coaches talk to each other? When they warm up either”closer” does the pitching coach ask the bullpen coach hey how does he look??? No matter the 2 genius managers just throw them out there and let them walk runs in at the najor league schedule. All the credit The sox pitching coach has gotten ver the years have some bals and ask him why they dp this< no guts by the coach, big ego on the player? Then ask him why Jenks throws a flat fastball that anyone can hit.

By the way many of your shos keep mentioning the ss at the cubs peroria team Hak-Ju Lee, I am not sure what you know about baseball but wathc him field 25 errors this year, an absolute butcher with the glove.
Come on ask these coaches some tough questions,

I’m hosting a golf outing with proceeds to benefit the Chicagoland Chapter of Autism Speaks and other local charities in NWI. Someone told me today that you frequently speak about your son and after reading your bio, it seems that you support autism research. You can find all the details of the “open to the public’ outing which will be at Pheasant Valley in Crown Point on 9/18 on our website at http://www.golf4autism.org. Any support you or your listeners can offer would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

Would not have minded M. Skowron sitting in w/ Hawk and Stone so much if he had reminiced about the 1964-67 time he was w/ the Sox. As an over 50 Sox fan I would have liked his recollections of Lopez, Stankey, and especially an elderly Hoyt Wilhelm!

Hey, Mac
My kid checked your credentials at Bears camp (the tall skinny blond kid named Jake). You asked him his name and shook his hand. You took the 10 seconds to do that so I thought you deserved the 10 seconds it takes to thank you.

Hi Danny, great to hear Chicago sports, down hear in Denton, TX, lived in Palatine, before relocating because of work. Keep up the great work. If the Sox can just forget that they are playing Twins, they would be all right, they are mentally beaten by this team
